Lower energy costs and a better day behind the wheel

Brown Bag Beverage delivers craft beverages to bars, restaurants, and grocery stores across San Diego County. With trucks on the road six days a week, the company wanted to manage fuel expenses while meeting the demands of local delivery work.

The business added two RIZON electric box trucks for local routes. The option for dock-height loading helped meet warehouse needs. Drivers plug in at the warehouse after deliveries, with charging scheduled for lower nighttime electricity rates. The CEO says the trucks are fully charged by morning.

“So we’re saving money six days a week.”

— Susie Baggs, CEO and Founder, Brown Bag Beverage

On his downtown route, Brown Bag’s lead driver appreciates fitting into delivery spaces he couldn’t use before, along with a smoother, quieter ride.

“All the drivers love the safety features.”

— Andrew, Lead Driver and Warehouse Manager, Brown Bag Beverage

He refers to the blind spot indicator and the rear-view camera as features that make driving the trucks easier.

LA Percussion and Backline Rentals

Los Angeles, California

Electric deliveries for Los Angeles’s music and production industry

Three LA Percussion and Backline Rentals team members with their white RIZON electric box truck: two standing in front of the cab and one leaning out of the driver’s window

LA Percussion and Backline Rentals supplies instruments and equipment to orchestras, touring acts, and productions. Its customers depend on reliable deliveries, with fragile and bulky instruments arriving on time and in good condition.

After frequent repairs to an older gasoline truck, the company chose a RIZON electric box truck. It was configured for instrument transport, with a side door, tracks to secure equipment, and a large tilting liftgate.

The crew can now operate the liftgate without the exhaust fumes they experienced with the old truck. Charging usually happens overnight at the warehouse. On longer trips, the team plans charging stops around lunch breaks.

After reviewing 12 months of business records, including warehouse and public charging, the owner reports a substantial reduction in fueling costs compared with gasoline.

“But again, we're saving 80% on fuel costs. So for a business like mine, a small business that runs on very thin margins, that is a huge deal for us.”

— Abby Savell, Owner, LA Percussion and Backline Rentals

“It just fit the job, and we just use it. So in a sense, you don't even notice it because it's just there, and it works.”

“So the fact that the truck is electric is a real benefit for us in being able to use it in facilities where we have food product exposure.”

“So we come in in the morning. It's all charged up and ready to go.”

On lowering charging costs

“We end up charging most of the time at night in the middle of the night when costs are very low and demand is very low. And that makes a huge difference in the cost as well.”

“So the size of the trucks are good for deliveries, but you fit in these spots that you couldn't fit before.”
